IT’S OFFICIAL: Brasov City, on the world map of marathons

The route of the Brasov International Marathon powered by Telekom, measured and approved by a high international forum

On Saturday and Sunday – May 20th and 21st, 2017 – the city at the foot of the Tampa will host the third edition of the Brasov International Marathon, one of the most spectacular running races in Romania, an event powered by Telekom Romania.

The competition route has been measured and approved by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) officials, an indispensable condition for the validation of competitions on the world map of marathons. This international forum comprises 400 marathons and races in 121 countries, 5 of which take place in Romania.

In order to ensure the accuracy of the route measurement process, the international technical team, led by Grade A Official Measurer Paolo Ottone on behalf of the IAAF/AIMS, used a special mechanical device mounted on a bike. The device was calibrated both before and after the procedure.  The measuring is done in one lap, with the bike taking the ideal route, accompanied by a Braşov Local Police escort, to make sure there are no incidents or deviations from the route. To guarantee the correctness of the measurement, the route was covered by two independent bikes, one ridden by Paolo Ottone and the other by Route Manager Bogdan Ionescu.

Alexandru Enache – a representative of the Sapte Scari Association of Braşov, Bogdan Antohe – race director, Gabriel Solomon – technical race director and Dan Cristea – Project manager for smartatletic also participated in the official measurement process.

Over 2,000 athletes from 21 countries

Up until now, over 2,000 athletes from Romania and another 21 countries have signed up to run in this unique sports event and a few thousand supporters have already announced that they will be there to cheer for their favourites. This international sports competition comprises 4 competitive races – marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), team run (4×10.7km), 10.7km, a non-competitive race – the popular 5.7km race – and two children’s races, a 500 metre race and a 1km race. Through the latter two, the organisers seek to strongly draw attention to child obesity, a phenomenon which has attained alarming rates in Europe.

Integrated concept for promoting Brașov and the country brand

At the same time, the Braşov International Marathon powered by Telekom Romania is an innovative way to promote mass sports and Romanian mountain resorts internationally, as over 100 foreigners have already announced their presence at the event.

Both the sports event and the main tourist sights of Braşov county were promoted at two international exhibitions. The first one took place in Italy, at the Sport Expo Lago Maggiore Marathon, where the Romanian stand was visited by many professional athletes from Kenya, Brazil, Thailand, Great Britain, Sweden, Italy, France, Germany and Hungary, many of whom have signed up for the event in Council Square (Piata Sfatului) on May 21st.  We set up our second promotion stand at the Barcelona Marathon, at an exhibition which brought together tens of thousands of participants and hundreds of thousands of supporters and spectators. For two whole days, the Romanian stand was “scrutinised” by people from all over the world, many of whom were eager to visit our country and meet Dracula, discover Transylvania, its sights, its traditions and its tasty food.

To further promote the event and the city of Brasov at an international level, the organisers also created an original video spot called “Explore! Eat & drink! Relax & have fun! Run! Brasov International Marathon”, which has now gathered over 70,000 views. The spot premiered at the Brasov International Marathon stand at the Barcelona Marathon and can be viewed here:
